Motown in Mexico

Six Months On…

April 4, 2007 · 18 Comments

Hola, amigos!  It’s hard to believe that I have been in the fine city of San Juan del Rio for six months already, and you sure wouldn’t know it from my Spanish skills, or lack thereof.  In many ways life now seems very “normal” in the sense that I am doing many of the same things here as I would be in Motown: working, paying bills, grocery shopping, and even finishing my %$#@!taxes for our friends at the IRS.  Thank goodness for TurboTax.  What I am trying to say is that the initial excitement that dominated the beginning of this great “adventure” has, not surprisingly, diminished and in many ways it just seems more like…life.  That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it just means I’ve been here for a while and that I’m comfortable.

Many things have occurred since my last update.  First, and most importantly, I now have HOT WATER!  Yes, it’s true.  While I am now using more water and natural gas, my hygiene has noticably improved to the point that girls don’t run screaming in the opposite direction as I approach…at least not for that reason.  It only took four months, but a friend helped me find a great plumber named Don Cruz.  Not only did Mr. Cruz come over for half-an-hour on a Sunday, but he also fought against any payment for his services!  Just a slight difference from the $200 it would cost to even get a plumber on the phone on a Sunday in the States, let alone come to your house.  So any of you using my previous lack of hot water as an excuse not to visit can scratch that one off your list.

I also broke down and bought some new wheels.  Nope, not a car–come on, now.  I bought a sharp-looking, Mexican-made, red mountain bike that I like to call “Diablo.”  Now my commute to work is only ten minutes.

I have also had many notable experiences since January.  For example, I visited my first Mexican beach, Puerto Vallarta, participated in a Native American “Sweat,” watched my first professional soccer match, and even went to see a very Mexican-sounding band by the name of “Intocable” (Untouchable).  The music of Intocable is not really my favorite, but it did give me a great excuse to wear a cowboy hat and spend US$15 for a six pack of Tecate Beer–some things don’t change no matter where you go.

Work continues to go well.  I am forcing my students to learn at least a little bit about what I think are the important things in American culture and/or the English Language: baseball, March Madness, AC/DC, Texas Hold ‘Em, and General Motors.  Most of them don’t like baseball, have no idea what March Madness is, and can’t understand a word of AC/DC.  However, they did like Texas Hold ‘Em because they beat me handily (no surprise) and they can relate to the auto industry since it is so prevalent down here, and is only becoming more so.   I do have many new students since the New Year, including four eleven-year-olds.  So if any of you have great ideas as to how I can make English fun for the youngsters please let me know–they need your help!

Okay friends, that’s the latest from San Juan del Rio.  I put some new pictures on the page entitled ”New Pics” so take a look.  Yes, there’s even a photo from the Intocable concert.  I’m not sure why I am making such blackmail so freely available, but it is there for your amusement.  I hope you are all happy and healthy.  Be well and remember, “La vida es buena!”  (Life is good!)

    Don,
Does your plumber make house calls to Detroit? Not that I’m having current problems, but for future reference. Your experience just reinforces what is really important in life. As you stated last summer….work is over-rated. I need to update you on my latest green move… some Colorado land. I’m one step closer to a dream of building an ultra-green home in the mountains…..following dreams. Are you coming back to the States this year?

I am hoping you made a visit to the “seahorse statue” in P.V. It’s Jim’s favorite place….Looking forward to seeing you soon.

    JACK,

It actually might be cheaper to fly my plumber to Detroit for a house call than pay someone local! And regarding a return to Detroit, it will likely be sometime in mid-July. Hasta pronto, amigo! DON

    ALISA,

Yep, we saw the seahorse statue. By the way, who is “Jim”? New boyfriend? DON

Looks like you’ve adjusted well. The pics are great! And it would appear, at least from the photos anyway, that not ALL of the senoritas are running the other way. (Couldn’t say I’d blame ‘em with that cowboy get-up your sporting in that one photo though…LOL!) Just kidding! You look great! Life in Mexico seems to agree with you. Take care.

Jim is your brother–have you really been away that long? You’ll have to ask him about the seahorse statue….or if he won’t tell you, maybe Trina (you remember Trina right?) can fill you in.

    ALISA,

Ohhhh, THAT Jim. Geez, it’s been 10 years or so since that trip and you still remember that it’s Jim’s favorite? I have a feeling this story involves Jim drinking too much tequila one night…

I could definitely use the plumbing help here. Old pipes are the worst. Good thing I am done with school and can focus on the important things like my golf game.

    Love that cowboy hat!

Sorry it has taken me a while to write… Believe it or not, I actually read through all of this when you sent it the first time.

It’s fun reading about your adventures and checking out the pics.

Good to hear you have hot water. I was cringing when I read your first update. Out of everything, that would be the hardest thing for me to adjust to!!

Red Wings are in the playoffs again…very exciting. 1st in the West. We start Thursday against Calgary. Despite half our stars being hurt, I am very excited and high hopes this year…as I always do! :)

So, I hear you’re headed back to MI soon. We’re very excited to have you back. Do you have plans and dates yet? Bringing back “una esposa??”

    Talk to you soon,
    Candice

    Don,
Great update and glad to see/hear you have found some companionship and hot water (not necessarily in that order). Thought I would pass on the info that Steve Cambell (Habitat’s Executive Director) is taking a new job at Habitat International. If you know anyone who has a heart for Habitat and is looking for a new career, there is an opportunity.

Don, ¿todo bien después del terremoto?

  • kboysandjuandelrio // April 15, 2007 at 10:36 pm

M.V.–Congrats to Mr. Campbell! Any idea what the base qualifications are for the job, except someone willing to work ridiculous hours for a below average wage? Just curious…

    CANDICE,

Well, I have force fed baseball and the Tigers to my students in an effort to expand their English, but I don’t think I’ll do the same with hockey. Ice hockey just isn’t that popular down here for some reason…

    Go Wings!

    Don,
forget ice hockey, march madness, baseball & just talk soccer…….it’s religion to Mexico.

SO – how will your Tigers do this year? My Phillies are off to a horrendous start, as per usual for them.

  • kboysandjuandelrio // April 20, 2007 at 4:03 pm

    ARA–

No problemas aquí del terremoto. ¡Estoy bien, gracias!

    Pam,

Yes, we have talked plenty of soccer here as well, believe me! But the other sports offer some different vocab and idioms that have some value, or at least I think so. Who knows, they’ll probably be glad to get rid of me in two months!

And regarding my Tigers, championship or bust this year…

    DON

I guess you will “bust” this year :)

    HOLA DON!
I hope you’re doing well :) sounds like it from your stories. My mom wants your address so we can send you a grad announcement and senior pic for Jonathan (don’t know if you’ll be around this summer- his grad party is july 14 so if by chance you’re in MI you better be coming!!) I think you should know that I am jealous of your being in Mexico and teaching.. if you plan on being there a while longer I will probably have to come visit you, I can practice my spanish.. since I haven’t been speaking it since December I’ve lost a lot of conversational ability! Keep us updated on all the fun you’re having!! espero que estes bien, hasta luego- Amanda Roos
